Planning the health-insurance bridge before arrival
Travel insurance and suitable German health cover serve different periods; planning the handover early prevents an expensive gap.
Health insurance affects both personal risk and residence paperwork. Freelancers moving from Thailand often focus on entry-day cover, but the more consequential question is what happens once ordinary residence begins.
Separate entry cover from ongoing cover
A travel policy may be appropriate for a limited journey yet unsuitable as long-term German health insurance. Read exclusions for pre-existing conditions, routine care and permanent relocation. Do not assume the word “international” settles whether an authority will accept a policy.
Get advice tied to your status
Public and private options involve eligibility rules, contribution structures and long-term consequences. Your age, prior insurance history, family situation, income and artistic or journalistic status can matter. Ask a qualified broker or insurer for written terms and disclose the intended move.
Build a dated handover
Record the end date of Thai cover, travel-policy period, proposed German start date and any waiting conditions. Keep policy certificates and confirmation of payment available. If dates depend on residence approval or registration, ask how the provider handles changes.
Insurance decisions can be difficult to reverse. A relocation adviser can help position the task in your timeline, but product recommendations should come from an authorised insurance professional.
